This Mother's Day, Buy Better Flowers

Your mom kicks ass. By now, you already know that, and you definitely don’t need anyone reminding you to send her flowers on Mother’s Day — this Sunday, May 8. But doing it right is another story.

“You really can’t go wrong with peonies,” says Cameron Hardesty, head of products for UrbanStems and former White House flower shop volunteer. “I don't know if it's divine intervention or just coincidence, but peonies come into season right at Mother’s Day, and they’re a beloved flower the world over.” Great, you’re almost done. Now, take a minute to run through the rest of this sage ordering advice. After all, Mom deserves it.

Skip the red roses. This is your mom we’re talking about, not your wife, and certain varieties represent specific things. Can't do peonies? Hardesty recommends hydrangeas. And if Mom’s a fan of roses, that doesn’t mean you have to completely ignore the variety. Hardesty says to switch it up from traditional pairings like pink and purple with a modern palette in green or orange.

Consider a succulent.Succulents are pretty hard to kill, which make them great gifts. According to Hardesty, they often come as part of an arrangement, and they're something Mom can keep forever. “You get the best of both worlds,” she says.

GIFT GUIDE: Mother's Day 2016

Know what you want. We’ve all been on the phone or online and gone with whatever the florist thinks is best or the first thing on a homepage. Most of the time this seems like a safe choice, and Mom still gets something delivered to her door, sure. Hardesty suggests doing a little more research and identifying specific types of flowers or plants. “In general,” she says, “the more specific you are, the better.” So when you're searching for green and orange roses, for example, look for Limonada or Free Spirit.

Call and visit her more. That’s probably all she really wants anyway.
