The Best of Netflix in 2015

Upon reflection, holy cow—2015 was an amazing year for entertainment! From blockbuster films like The Force Awakens and Fury Road to hot new albums from Kendrick Lamar and Chvrches, it seemed like not a single month went by without something awesome to entertain us. Not only did Hollywood step up their game, but Netflix continued its legacy of fantastic original shows and series, while giving us plenty to look forward to in the coming months of 2016. So let's countdown our favorite Netflix series from last year, as well as what we're dying to binge watch this year. 1. Marvel's…

The Last North: A Polar Expedition Never to Be Repeated

Credit: Photographs Courtesy Animal Planet Snow, ice, cold. Snow, ice, cold. That's how polar explorer Eric Larsen describes his many trips to some of the most extreme corners of the planet — the North and South poles and the top of Mt. Everest, among them. In March 2014, Larsen and teammate Ryan Waters embarked on 53-day slog from the northern tip of Canada's Ellesmere Island to the geographic North Pole, a distance of some 500 miles. The expedition was entirely unsupported, meaning that Larsen and Waters carried all of their gear and supplies for the entire trip in two modified…

Solitude, UT: Where to Ski Now

Travel Email Print More Credit: Mike Tittel / Getty Images Solitude may be smaller than the resorts one canyon over, but it takes half the time to get to from SLC airport (20 mins), and you still get all the same incredible Utah powder. Situated in the quiet Big Cottonwood canyon, this 58 year-old ski mountain actually prides itself on its wild feel, which more than makes up for it having only eight lifts. That's why the locals know that the best of its 1,200 acres is reached by skinning or hiking. Honeycomb Canyon, in particular, has some of…

Mt. Brighton, MI: Where to Ski Now

Travel Email Print More Credit: Pat Schutte / Mt. Brighton A suburb of Detroit, Brighton, Michigan, is home to the area's family winter destination since 1960. The mountain has five terrain parks that spread throughout 130 acres for skiing and snowboarding of all ages. The new Children’s Ski and Ride School Center offers kids dining, indoor play areas, and skiing and riding programs for kids ages 3 to 12. Brighton is as family friendly off the slopes as it is on: Its downtown area has over 25 restaurants and bars, and its share of candy shops and boutiques. All-day…

Whistler-Blackcomb, BC: Where to Ski Now

Travel Email Print More Credit: Paul Morrison / Whistler-Blackcomb For the most European skiing experience in North America, Whistler-Blackcomb delivers two huge mountains worth of terrain; a small ski-city where you could hit a different apres venue every night for a month; and serious lines on giant glaciated peaks that go on forever. Whistler-Blackcomb is just 75 miles north of Vancouver — and the coast — and, as you may remember from the Winter Olympic showing in 2010, it can get wet. But on a normal year expect a ridiculous 462 inches of annual snow. This is one of the…

Alta and Snowbird, UT: Where to Ski Now

Travel Email Print More Credit: Scott Markewitz / Getty Images Powder is what every skier and boarder lives for, and there's no better place to float on the fluffy stuff than Alta and Snowbird. Tucked high up in Little Cottonwood Canyon, it's not unheard of for the two resorts to get some 800 inches of snow. When it dumps, follow the booms: the ski patrol rolls out the in-bounds openings throughout the day as they do avalanche control, meaning there are always fresh runs. But a can't-miss is the Snowbird Tram, which drops you off at the top of hidden…

Bretton Woods, NH: Where to Ski Now

New Hampshire's largest ski area also boasts its biggest views, across the Presidential Range with a clear shot of the highest peak on the East coast, Mount Washington. In the heart of the 2,000-acre White Mountain National Forest, the ski area spans three peaks, with 460 skiable acres, 10 lifts, and nearly a hundred runs. It's no surprise that you'll find everything from blues to blacks, though the resort prides itself on its accessible and well-groomed intermediate terrain and glades (there's even a 1.5km cross-country trail at the top of the mountain). But Bretton Woods also gets a unique boost from Mother Nature.…

Crystal Mountain, WA: Where to Ski Now

Just two hours from Seattle, Crystal Mountain is Washington state's largest ski resort, with just over 2,600 acres. And thanks to its neighbor, 14,400-foot Mount Rainier, huge storms coming in off the Pacific get stuck overhead, dumping 486 inches of snow annually. With thousand-foot hanging glaciers, Rainier itself may be an intimidating sight, but Crystal Mountain actually holds some surprisingly fun and mellow runs, with 60 percent of its 57 trails made for intermediate skiing or below. Despite a few chairlifts, this is true wilderness skiing, smack in the middle of vast National Forest land and, if you're equipped, you can easily…
