Perfect Golf in Cartagena

Credit: Photographs by Nicholas Hegel McClelland It’s easy to fall in love with TPC Cartagena at Karibana. The two-year-old golf course boasts ocean views, pristine-jungle-lined holes, and sun-drenched fairways, all with an exotic, 582-year-old city just a few miles away. But with plenty of opportunities to lose your ball in the water and more sand-traps than you can shake a seven iron at, that love will go unrequited. Created by Jack Nicklaus Design, the track tantalizes players over the first nine holes with the excitement of playing along the sea. But don’t lose focus dreaming of the ocean. The opening…

Miami: The Four-Day Weekend

See Miami by way of Biscayne Bay — on a standup paddleboard. Credit: Photographs by Randy Harris Right now, somewhere in South Beach, a guy is palming a valet a fifty to make sure he parks his yellow Lamborghini in front of the club, where he and his bikini-model date will sip syrupy $18 caipirinhas at an Ocean Drive hot spot owned by an '80s pop star. Welcome to Miami! But that's not the Miami for you. There's another one now — one that's more refined, more authentic, swayed more by culture than celebrity. It's a Miami that will reward…

Chicken Soup for a Cold?

You’ve got a cold. Tis the season. It’s unfortunate, but a fact of life that as we experience cooler weather and keep our windows closed, we close the germs in with us. Those around us sneeze and then touch shopping carts. Your sister’s son wipes his runny nose on your shirt. It happens. And there’s no cure for a cold. The best we can do is treat the symptoms so that we feel more comfortable until it passes. First, get a flu shot. Yes, there are a lot of types of flu, but protection against the experts’ prediction of the…

Readers Are More Attractive

Are you a reader or are you satisfied with that game of Candy Crush on your iPhone? Do you flip through a magazine on occasion or actually sit down and read a novel? A novel. Fiction. If you’re not reading novels, you may not be as attractive to the opposite sex. There have been studies by psychologists that prove that people that read fiction are nicer and more intelligent. These readers are more likely to listen to others and empathize; to entertain the ideas of others. They have experienced multiple lives through the characters in novels and are more easily…

Canada Says HIV Cases Not Criminal

In Toronto this week, infectious disease experts are battling the justice system. The experts want criminal prosecution for those who do not disclose HIV infection to sexual partners. The Supreme Court of Canada, in 1998, ruled that HIV positive people must tell sexual partners about their HIV status or be charged with aggravated sexual assault with jail time of 14 years and the potential for a sex offender label. There have been more than 150 cases tried using this ruling. In some cases, the charges are filed years later when the information comes to light or the person who was…

Best Las Vegas Day Trips

View More Photos Grant Faint/Getty If Las Vegas is a city built on vice, its bricklayers are conventioneers. Each year, 4.5 million lanyard-wearing, welcome packet–toting businessmen descend upon Sin City for no fewer than 18,000 conventions. (World of Concrete Annual Meeting, anyone?) So between marathon panel discussions, you lose $500 at the craps table, drop another $100 on a rib eye at Tom Colicchio's, and slip – how much was it again? – into G-strings at the Spearmint Rhino. Here's the antidote: three soul-restoring adventures waiting just outside the city. And none of them requires a lanyard or a fistful…

Canada's Mountain Film Festival

Travel Phillip Chin / WireImage / Getty Images The Whistler Film Festival kicked off this week on December 4 as filmmakers, industry professionals, and cinephiles made their way to British Columbia's Fitzsimmons Range and Whistler-Blackcomb Resort. Launched in 2001, the Canadian Sundance has mushroomed into a major event that attracts more than 10,000 locals and tourists eager to see almost a hundred films from around the world. And, instead of forcing attendees to choose between going to films and skiing, WFF's planners tend to assume everyone will do both. "We've had people connect on chairlifts and hot tubs at parties…

Why Flying on Christmas Is the Smart Decision

Travel Getty Images Santa isn't the only one logging flight time on Christmas. Savvy travelers know that December 25 is the cheapest day of the holiday season to fly and jump at the chance to stroll through only moderately busy airports. But a bit of savings isn't the only reason to book a flight. According to Rick Seaney, CEO of the deal site FareCompare, traveling on the holiday also means having a better chance of making it to your destination on time and in decent psychological condition. "The bottom line is that it's a better day to fly because there…
