The Best $138 You'll Ever Spend on a Watch

As a proud owner of more than 100 vintage Timex watches, it’s safe to say Todd Snyder is a bona fide fan. After an initial partnership with the 160-year-old watch brand that tested the collaborative waters, the New York–based menswear designer's sophomore launch is one he holds close to his heart: the Timex x Todd Snyder Mod watch.

“The first one was more me as a minister in the marriage; this one is more selfishly closer to me,” says Snyder, having long been a fan of the military-inspired Camper and Scout styles. “I’ve been a big collector of Timex for around 15 years… my grandfather and father both wore Timexes.”

What’s most evident with this 1970s-inspired timepiece is how the hours are counted in military time: a black ring goes from midnight to noon, and an outer red ring goes from noon to midnight. The white ring on the edge of the bulls-eye dial counts the seconds, and an arrow-shaped second hand rounds out the primary functions. As a further nod to Snyder’s evolving military-inspired design ethos, the 40mm case is paired with a gray NATO strap.

“It has a clean, modern finish without being too slick," he says. "I didn’t want it to be super fast. The face does a lot of the work. The case and strap help balance the dial out.”

Luminant hands, an Indiglo night-light, and 50-meter water resistance round out the primary attributes. “Todd brings [out the] right touch of American heritage but with a passionate twist,” says Giorgio Galli, Timex global design director, who gave Snyder full freedom to explore the archives.

This week every model in Snyder’s Spring 2017 collection walked down the runway wearing the Mod watch, which was loosely inspired by vintage images from the gambling mecca of Monaco. While the initial batch of 500 have already sold out, more are coming soon — as are future watch collaborations between the two brands.
